Painted Mismatched Chairs
It’s fun to have a local client who entrusts me to do a little DIY project for their home too, so when it came time to choose some dining chairs I threw out the idea to buy some old, non matching, thrifted chairs & paint them all in my favorite Kelly Green. This would not only give the homeowner a custom look but would also be much more cost effective then buying three new matching chairs.
Of course, when you are looking for something at a thrift/antique store you can never find it. Why must that always be the case?!? It took a little longer than anticipated to find three well built chairs with the right lines, but I finally did! They all have great lines & balance each other out.
They definitely needed some TLC though… My initial plan was to brush them, until I bought the center one with all the spindles. So out came the spray. First, a good solid coat of primer & a quick sand with a fine grade paper.
Already so much better. After the primer was dried & sanded I gave them a few coats of Rustoleum’s Meadow Green (the same as my HGTV Magazine dresser…I can all it that now right?!?) I then sealed them with a spray polyurethane for durability.
Now these lovely ladies have some attitude! I can’t wait to see them once paired with the Acradia Extension Table from World Market
It really is going to be lovely! Can’t wait to get them delivered this weekend.
Kristin, I'm so glad I took the time to come over her FINALLY. I love the way your Home Depot Patio challenge turned out. Seriously love. And these chairs are fabulous in green. Fabulous and….inspiring. (Totally eyeing mine.) Take care!
I love all those items. That color rocks! xo Kristin
Love the combo of the settee, table and new chairs. Such a fresh combo!
That's going to look awesome, love that color!
that is SO true about shopping for thrift/vintage/antique finds! can't wait to see it all together!

So awesome! I love the Emerald green. I can't wait to see the final reveal of all the items put together!
gorgeous! love the colors. I have a bench I've been meaning to paint, but I've been delaying because I was dreading painting the spindles…spray paint it is!
love it!!! Ok going to ask a dumb question– so only 3 chairs? are you doing 3 on one side? a bench on the other side perhaps? Im sure you have something awesome planned-just thought Id ask.
omg!! Im a dork!!! LOL!! I just realized the settee is your bench for the other side- right? thats why only 3 chairs *hits forehead*
I am so in love with this idea and these peices in particular.
I have to ask, I'm dying to repurpose my leather full length sofa at my dining room table, but it's normal lounging height and too short for dining. Aren't you going to have the same issue? How are you going to address it?
Love the idea of unifying with color, but adding some extra visual texture with mis-matching chairs. That color came out brilliantly, too!
I also like the idea of having chairs of different sizes – each of the chair seats were at slightly different levels. This gives shorter and taller people the ability to find something that suits their tush. Call me Goldilocks! (I may be 5'-11" and 53, and I'm still looking for the chair that's just right!)
Technical question: Do you need to do anything different to prep the woven seat bottom before painting? Since it's made to move when sat upon, what keeps the paint from chipping?
Love the emerald chairs with that settee, that is going to look amazing together, Great job Kristin,

You are killing me with that combo! Its going to look SO good. Can't wait to see it all together.
What an amazing and fun combo. Can't wait to see how it turns out. I'm deeming you my color maven! Always going bold and it always pays off!
And yes. You better call it your HGTV dresser!
Love the look and love that green…cant wait to see the whole room done!
these look so good! Man, isn't that meadow green like one of their best colors ever?! I did a mirror in it recently.. came out great. Before that I did a chair in it with a black, white and grey geometric print.. that color rocks.
Great job!
These chairs are perfect ~ no matchy, matchy. π LOVE the green! I must paint something that color. The pieces are going to look smashing when all together!

I am on the hunt for that exact table!! Everything you do is amazing. My eyes always just bug our of my head from all of the lovely things you manage to pull together and weave with such class and consistency!
I love this project–the finished product will be stunning. I love how the kelly green creates unity without resorting to a matched set.
Oddly enough, the middle/spindle chair and the ladder-back chair look almost identical to chairs that my parents have always had in their homes. I inherited our spindle look-alike chair, but I think my woodworking father would faint if I ever painted it.: )
I love this project–and the finished project will be stunning. I love how the kelly green creates unity without resorting to a matched set.
Oddly, I had chairs similar to the ladder-back and spindle-back ones in my childhood home. Although I inherited our spindle-back look-alike, I think my woodworking father would faint if I ever painted it. : )
succcch an awesome idea! I want to do this!

Wow, I love that combo! Kelly green, warm wood, and that setee…genius!
I can't wait to see either… those are the colors I'm currently updating my home with!
I've also been contemplating buying mismatched chairs for my new farmhouse table. Love how these turned out with that gorgeous green paint.
Love that colour! I really like what you've paired them with too – hopefully we'll get to see shots of the finished room π
So pretty! I did a restaurant project in school a little while ago with mismatched chairs. Love that look.
Such a different and stunning combination. Love it!
Gorgeous! Love the colors!

Hi THanks for posting this! I am currently also in the process of painting my dining chairs. Is this green available in spray paint?
I so love that color. I can't wait to see the table and chairs all together, I'm sure they will look awesome. Have a great day.
Oh yes, this room is going to be amazing! So smart to bypass the matchy-matchy dining room look. That's a pet peeve of mine. I think that's why I painted our dining room table from PB white. I couldn't stand looking at the matching set I purchased ten years ago. π
Can't wait to see how you put it all together!

so smart! it's going to look fab!!
