Lacquer Tray How To
Another project for the patio complete! And this is also something that will be used indoors too. I figured I’d share this super easy project with ya’ll even though I can’t show you it’s final resting place yet π
I shared this pic via Instagram last week mid paint drying. I told ya I was feeling pink this year!
This project couldn’t have been easier & I completed it with materials I had lying around the house. You know how I love to do that!! Here are the materials you need to create your own Glossy Tray.
I had the bamboo tray sitting in a closet. It’s yellow undertones never went with anything so I figured I’d give it an update & a chance to sit in the sun for awhile. I gave it a few coats of Plaid Acrylic Paint in Strawberry. I liked using the Acrylic Paint as it dries super quick. Once all my coats were dry I added two coats of Minwax High Build Polyurethane. This is an oil based product so I recommend doing it outdoors… not inside while the kiddo is taking a nap like me.
After the first coat dried (a few hours) a gave it a quick sand with a fine grade steel wool & coated it again. Once dry, it has a great mirror like finish with little to no brush marks.
I could have used a spray paint, but the uber gloss isn’t there, & I couldn’t find the right pink. Pinks are tough in spray form…
Loving my little lotus bowl too. Another Goodwill find. They were sneaky though… the bowl separates into two pieces & obviously go together, so what did they do? Price each of them individually! But at $4 all in I couldn’t really complain. Could I? Nah…
Can’t wait to share all the deck projects with you. It’s really starting to come together. Even in the snowy weather we had this weekend. Here is the list of the other talented bloggers participating this time around. Love this crew!
Happy Monday!

Looks fab, Kristin! Love the pink! xo Kristin
Looks great, Kristin! Glad to have another glossy option rather than spray paint.
Awesome – and I have a blah brown tray sitting on my counter right now! I think it needs to be bright blue. Thanks for the inspiration!
Oh Kristin, you read my mind! I was showing my sister your blog yesterday for ideas on how to add color to her room, and we were having a tough time coming up with how to give an item a pink glossy look. We were going to go with spray paint, but after reading your post, we'll go with polyurethane and get the look we are really after! Love it! btw, got any tips for painting metal? (that's our next project)
Thanks Jordan! My best tip for painting metal is to use a metal friendly spray paint & wipe the surface down with Vinegar (any kind works) prior to spraying. For some reason it prepares the surface for better adhesion. Good Luck!

Looking good! Love that pink, it's totally fun and makes me excited for the warmer weather π
Gorgeous! It looks like it's from West Elm. What a gorgeous pink color!
Great idea- I have to make a tray for a client and I just may be using this trick! Thanks girlie!
Love that pink, and high gloss!! I painted one pink this weekend too, but it's the wrong shade. Round two next weekend.
Love that Home Depot graphic!! Hadn't seen it!!
What the what?? I am having a "why didn't I think of that?" moment. It's gorgeous and fun. Love it. I am curious as to how much the bamboo tray cost? Is it a money saver compared to a tray from West Elm?
Thanks Melissa! It was a definite money saver for me as I already had everything π But I did get the tray for 50% off at Hobby Lobby… I think it was only about $10.
I am absolutely going to do this – stat! Thanks for the idea π

LOVE that high gloss!! I've tried the gloss spray paint, but you're right it never quite cut it for that lacquer look.
Did you paint the bottom? Looks gorgeous!
Love high gloss pink and it is hard to get a nice high gloss. Looks awesome. I love using acrylic craft paint to but never thought about adding the poly because I'm always afraid of it yellowing.
That lotus bowl is the best!
This is lovely! Glad to know the poly really makes it shine. May have to attempt one of these myself if I can find a good (by that I mean cheap/thrifted) tray!
Wow I love it!
Ooh, I love this!!! Totally going to have to try it. Yours turned out beautifully!
Love this high gloss tray! Definitely need to try this on something stat!
Had to share this on my blog! Perfect for my Grey and Pink color story! Love your style!
That is harder than spray paint, but WHAT a result!! IT'S FABULOUS!

This is beautiful! Lovely shade of pink.
Love the tray! I have to tell you I have the same silver lotus that I found at a consignment store. It actually is supposed to have a little tray with holes that fit down inside the smaller bowl that hold cut flowers. I love mine, although its not very functional for flowers because the stems can only be an inch or two long!
ADORE your blog. Please come design and decorate my new house! π
